Grüner Veltliner - 2026 June Bundle

Grüner Veltliner is Austria's flagship dry white wine. It is celebrated for its crisp acidity, bright citrus flavors. It’s a light to medium body wine with high acidity and should be served around 45-50 degrees.

We’ve picked Grüner Veltliner because we think the combination of bright and floral makes for an exceptionally refreshing and delicious wine.

These three wines are all from AVAs with large temperature regulating bodies of water. This makes the winters less cold and the summers less hot. The vineyards are spread over about 370 miles north-to-south with Amos Rome in Lake Chelan in mid-central Washington the furthest north, Savage Grace in Columbia Gorge, WA, in the middle, and Dr. Konstantin Frank at Seneca Lake in New York the furthest south.

Lake Chelan and Seneca Lake are the furthest north and south of these three AVAs  respectively and get roughly the same amount of seasonal heat and the lakes function as thermal heat sinks. Both benefit from gentle air circulation as the cool air drains down the hills toward the water. Lake Chelan however gets much less rain than Seneca Lake and just in the winter where Seneca Lake gets rain all year round. This means WInemakers must irrigate and can decide just how much water their grapes get whereas they do not irrigate in Seneca Lake. 

In contrast to the above two areas, Underwood in Columbia Gorge is much colder due to the high winds that dry out any summer humidity. Underwood sits right in a dramatic transitional zone. The western end of the Columbia Gorge is a rainforest, while the eastern end is a desert. Underwood falls right in the middle, and gets a generous 30+ inches of rain, mostly during the winter. Because the high-elevation soil holds onto the water, winemakers do not have to irrigate here.
